Baritone Tyler Duncan’s voice has “that rare mixture of elegant phrasing and resonant power” (Toronto Star), he has been described as a “great communicator ” (Vancouver Sun) with a “warm versatile voice” (Goldberg Magazine). After residing in Augsburg, Germany, the Canadian baritone now lives in New York.

He is in high demand as a versatile soloist who is at home singing in the lieder, opera and oratorio genres spanning from Monteverdi to Mozart to modern music. His performances have taken him throughout Europe and North America, some highlights include his Carnegie Hall debut with pianist Erika Switzer, a North American tour of the Monteverdi Vespers 1610 with Tragicomedia and Concerto Palantino, the role of Papageno in Holland and Belgium, the High Priest in the Strauss adaptation of Mozart’s Idomeneo at the Richard Strauss Festival in Garmisch Partenkirchen, Elgar’s Dream of Gerontius at the Elora Festival, Handel’s La Resurrezione for the Handel Festival in Halle and Bach’s Christmas Oratorio Tafelmusik in Toronto.

Tyler performs often with pianist Erika Switzer giving recitals in Canada, Germany, Sweden, France and South Africa. Radio recordings can often be heard on the CBC and BR (Bavarian Radio) as well as a recent performance on WGBH Boston. Tyler recently won the 2008 Oratorio Society of New York’s Lyndon Woodside Solo Competition. In 2006, he was selected for the Pro Musicis International Award in Paris. His singing has also been recognized in prizes from international competitions such as the Walter W. Naumburg in New York, the ARD in Munich, the Wigmore Hall in London and the Johann Sebastian Bach in Leipzig. He is also the recipient of several generous grants from the Canada Council for the Arts.

Tyler carries degrees in music from the University of British Columbia, the Hochschule fuer Musik Augsburg where he studied under Prof. Edith Wiens and the Hochschule fuer Musik und Theater in Munich where he studied at the August Everding Bavarian Theatre Academy and studied song interpretation with Prof Helmut Deutsch. He also was selected for a residency at the Steans Institute at Ravinia and the Franz Schubert Institute in Baden Austria.

In 2008/2009 Tyler’s performances will include John Blow’s Venus & Adonis for the Boston Early Music Festival, Handel’s Messiah with Portland Baroque and Bach’s St Matthew Passion with the Dresdner Kreuzchor.
