In the midst of the current crop of gifted Brazilian musicians, the young guitar prodigy Yamandu Costa is a standout. Costa began playing the "violão de 7 cordas" when he was a child, and today he is a passionate player and improviser of Latin American music, with special emphasis on his own Brazilian musical roots. He’s been influenced by Piazzolla, Jobim, and Django Reinhardt and he’s also one of the few composers of contemporary gaucho instrumental music. The captivating sound he delivers combines choro (the music played most often in Brazil) with gaucho melodies and dance rhythms, and the result is a distinctly new and exciting blend of Latin roots music and jazz. His Festival appearance will be with his current acoustic trio, featuring favourite musical collaborators Nicolas Krassik and Guto Wirtti. Their seductive sound will find its perfect setting in the lush greenery of the VanDusen Botanical Garden.
