Ute Lemper
with Werner Vana Gierig, piano; Don Falzone, bass; Eric Halvorson, drums; Hector Castro, bandoneón.
From Berlin to Paris to New York City, Germany’s Ute Lemper is acknowledged as the definition of sophisticated cabaret cool. She’s gifted with Marlene Dietrich-like good looks and a magnetic stage presence but it’s her intelligent, nuanced interpretations of Berlin cabaret songs – especially Bertold Brecht and Kurt Weill’s collaborations – that have elevated her to star status.
Lemper’s multiple theatre honours include an Olivier in London for her performance as Velma Kelly in Chicago, and an American Theatre Award for reprising the role on Broadway. Critics have praised her recent stint at New York’s Café Carlyle, as well as groundbreaking recordings that showcase her unique take on the music of Edith Piaf, Stephen Sondheim and Elvis Costello. Now Ute Lemper makes her first appearance at the festival with a show that’s all about passion, style and electricity. This will be a very special opening night indeed.
“...an incredible show, acted as much as sung...the kind of performance that will be remembered for a lifetime”. (The Independent/UK)
